October Bridge Letter 2010

Welcome once again after a longer than usual break.
So its shoulder to the wheel again!
On a personal note we had an enjoyable few days on the South coast.
We visited a welcoming bridge club in Paignton.
This club meets in a very nice venue.
It is a building which was once the family home of the Singer family.
The painted ceiling and marble halls have to be seen to be believed, truly magnificent.
I hope the council find a way to preserve this national treasure.

While surfing the net I came across a delightful custom. Has anyone one heard of it? The beer card??
This is the 7 of diamonds. The story goes hat when the last trick is taken with this card the player has to buy the table a beer.
Apparently it harks back to a Danish game called Tarok or possibly to the Danish form of Skat.
Sometimes some players had side bets between partners.
Another delightful variation of bridge is Honeymoon bridge. This gets its name as it is a variation which can be played by two people, hence its name.
There are several versions but the rules can be found on the Honeymoon Bridge page at

I often use the first and find it is idiot proof, it must be if I have no problems with it.
