We have been anxiously scrutinising the average temperature charts for March, but it can’t be worse than the UK!

Lords v Commons

The annual match took place on 12th December and had a really close finish.
Alas for us ordinary mortals the Lords prevailed winning by a measly 110 points to take the series 18-16 in the overall series.

There is a new league available to London clubs,  the TGR ‘s bridge club instituted a Super League which has had a good first season.  Clubs interested in taking part can contact.

Obituary

This Winter has been particularly harsh and the Midlands lost several members who had been stalwart players for many many years.  I would however like to remember Harold Greenaway who died in January 2009.

He was a member of the Martineau Bridge club from the early 1970s and later played at Arden bridge club.  He played in the Birmingham Businesses House and the South Warwickshire league for many years.

He was the deputy head of King Edwards Boys School Camphill where he took a great interest in the chess club.

During the many years he played he was unfailingly courteous during the bridge play.  He was also extremely patient with his partners, who it must be said, did not match up to his playing ability.

Sadly a stroke and subsequent surgery badly affected him and the likeable pleasant personality we knew disappeared and he became increasingly irascible and tetchy.

This meant that he became very difficult at the bridge table for his partners and opponents alike and he gradually dropped out of the bigger clubs.

I would like us to remember him as he was and not how he became!

Partner

Of the three opponents at bridge, the one who sits opposite you.

Post Mortem

A time set aside for relief of frustration by blaming partner for your mistakes or having a useful and enlightening discussion.

Precision

A bidding system which utilises the 1♣ opener as a conventional gauntlet to the opposition, challenging them to see if they dare bid 2♠ before you and partner have had a chance to discuss suits.

Pre - empt

A charitable device designed to keep opponents out of a Good Contract or any excessive or unsound bid in an uncontested auction

Probability

A branch of mathematics designed to lend respectability to guessing. Almost by definition, it is a dubious science.

Psyche

To make a bid outside your convention agreement. Fooling friend and foes alike.  This bit will not win friends at the bridge table.
