February 2008 Bridge Newsletter.
Happy New Year again to all our readers, I hope the festive season was a success and everyone received what they desired!!!!
Firstly some news from the North, Manchester B beat Cheltenham in the Inter Club Knockout championship on the 1st December.
A future event sounds very interesting the WBF/BBO is holding a women’s Bridge festival 7th to 13th April. Sounds ideal for online bridge players to test their skills against players from all over the world.
Also an event that is certainly putting temptation my way…..
The North American Bridge Championships are being held March 6-16th in Detroit MI and better still in Las Vegas in July 17-27th. It would be nice to combine a holiday with a chance to see some of the best bridge players, even if we were knocked out on the first day.
Glossary of terms (cont)
EHAA every hand an adventure. This has weak NT openings(10-12), 4 card majors and flimsy weak 2 bids in all four suits.
Sounds fun.
Elope win a trick by ruffing with a low trump.
Entry Squeeze a squeeze in which one of the victim’s busy cards forestalls an entry.
Exhaust deprive entirely (cards in a given suit).
Sometimes it seems as if bridge is a dying art so it is very heartening to read of a successful attempt to reverse the trend. Other areas take note.
Bridge classes have been started and are running well at Arden school of bridge in Shirley Birmingham UK. 36 students started from scratch and most have graduated to the improvers’ class also being run by the club. A second beginners’ class has already started and runs parallel with the first class. The teacher Larry Sayer is obviously doing a grand job aided and abetted by Bill Jones.
